Mission in Church has a goal to care for and help orphaned children Nepal. Our main orphanage is in Kathmandu and we are home to children from the ages of 4 – 16 years. There are six other orphanages across Nepal in partnership with Mission in Church with opportunities available for volunteer placement. Mission in Church provides each child with a Jesus loving home and a hope for the future by offering these children care, shelter, and an education. Nepal is home to more orphans than most countries as a result of poverty and high unemployment rates.
Another influential factor was the Nepali Civil War (1996-2006) in which it is estimated 17,000 people were killed and 150,000 were internally displaced, leaving government social programs in ruins. Education is a difficult task for most families. 50% of the population lives on 1 USD per day and because of this, many children begin life in the workforce at a very young age and often in very undesirable working conditions. The government is unable to provide any type of welfare for disadvantaged families which has resulted in high rates of child abandonment in poor communities where the parents can barely provide for themselves. Other factors effecting Nepal’s high number of orphan children include domestic violence and social discrimination.
Mission in Church partners with a number of orphanages to expand the social support networks of these abandoned children. Volunteers have the opportunity to use their time to help the children with school work, build strong relationships and take the children on excursions to places like a museum, fun park or swimming pool.
We also have sponsorship support programs that can practically equip the children for future employment and general life. Children who have lost their parents, who have been abused, and children whose parents can’t provide for their basic living necessities are in need of emotional and financial support. These children in the orphanage need love, attention, life skills and education so that they can have successful futures free from poverty and filled with the same joy and opportunities as others.
