Mission in Church offers a Teach English volunteer opportunity across Nepal. Involvement in teaching English is an enriching and satisfying experience where volunteers get the opportunity to teach students who are eager to improve their conversational English skills. Students born into the current Nepali school-going generation value their education and are motivated to be taught new things about the world.
Volunteers work either in Nepali public or private schools or an orphaned children’s center, in either a regional or urban setting. Our schools are scattered across Nepal, in areas such as Kathmandu, Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan, Pokhora, Hetauda and Nawlprasi. Volunteers may also be asked to assist in other school activities such as sports and other extra-curricular projects whilst volunteering.
The teaching English volunteer opportunity consists of teaching English to school children for 2 to 4 periods of a day, with each period running for 45 minutes. Volunteers will be required to teach 6 days per week. Saturday is a day off for volunteers to enjoy some free time and there are occasionally public holidays. Most children in private schools have a reasonable grasp of English but still need practice and guidance, while government school children have a beginning to moderate level of English knowledge and language. Depending on school size, class numbers vary between 15-25 in private schools to more than 50 in government schools, especially in lowland areas. In more remote areas of Nepal, there can be as few as 15 in a class.
In urban locations such as Kathmandu, a local teacher will assist you in conducting the class during your first week, and address any language barriers or concerns that arise during teaching. You will be asked to run the class once the children become familiar with you. Volunteers should not be concerned about what to teach, as all private and government schools follow a strict Nepali curriculum which can be implemented in teaching. However, if one is confident enough, volunteers are more than welcome to apply their own teaching blueprint.
Private schools and our orphanage centre offer the opportunity to teach subjects other than English, however due to the language barrier, this option cannot be made available in public schools. If you have additional skills in extra-curricular activities such as: teaching games, music, painting, singing, dancing, yoga, and martial arts, then you are most welcome to incorporate this into the lesson plan. If you would like to be involved in teaching English whilst volunteering with us then we would be very happy to try to arrange this. Please visit program fees Click here
